Choose a server by its rules
Each server sets its own rules: PvP, friendly fire, difficulty, how long the world is kept, weather and map. Read a server’s details before you join.
Proximity voice
| Voice level | Who hears you |
|---|---|
| Whisper | Only players right next to you |
| Normal | Players nearby |
| Shout | Players a fair distance away |
Hold Caps Lock to talk. ↑ changes your voice level and P mutes your microphone. Voice comes from your character: anyone nearby can hear you, group or not.
Text chat and groups
Open the chat with Enter or T and pick a channel: nearby, group, global or direct messages. Look at another player and use the interaction menu to invite them. Y accepts and X declines an invitation.
Joining friends with an invite code
A friend who hosts a private server can send you an invite code (six groups of four characters). In the server browser choose Join with invite code at the top right, paste the code and join. Copy the code instead of typing it; the host finds it in the game under Esc › System or in the host window.
Game updates and your progress
Before a server updates to a new game version, a countdown with the version appears in the game. The server saves and restarts; your character, your inventory and your base are kept. If a changed map puts something you built in the way, those building parts and their contents are packed into a storage crate at your base.
In singleplayer the world list keeps backups of each world, including one from before every game update. You can restore an earlier state at any time – the current one is kept as a backup too.
Logging out safely
Logging out takes a short countdown – twice as long if you were just in combat. Moving cancels it. Simply disconnecting does not remove your character straight away, so find cover and log out properly.
